Raiders star in tears as premiers stunned in huge upset

Canberra have pulled off one of the upsets of the season, defeating the defending premiers Penrith Panthers 22-18.
The win left club captain Elliott Whitehead in tears after his final game at home before he heads back to the Super League.
“I’m getting emotional, it means a lot to me this club. I’ve been here nine years, I didn’t think I’d get emotional on TV,” he told Fox League.

“After two years I didn’t think I’d stay here for nine years but I love everyone in this club, even the teammates that have left like Jack (Wighton). I’ve got some great memories and great friends from this club and they’ll be a big part of my life from now on.”

Young star Xavier Savage was the main man for the Raiders, scoring his first career double which included the winner after a Matthew Timoko intercept.
Both sides went try for try in the first 10 minutes with Savage scoring first before Luke Sommerton returned serve to make it a 6-4 lead for the Panthers.
The same situation continued in the first half with Kaeo Weekes and Daine Laurie both scoring.

Penrith had the lead at half time though with Dylan Edwards kicking a penalty goal to make it 12-10.
The Panthers extended their lead straight after the break when James Fisher-Harris scored.
However, the Raiders stayed in the hunt with Albert Hopoate making it 18-16 with 20 minutes left.
With 10 minutes left, the Panthers attacked the tryline before Jarome Luai threw an intercept pass with Savage finishing it off to seal a 22-18 win.
“They have fought and scrapped their way to their best win of the season … what a win from the Raiders,” league great Mick Ennis said.
